This work outlines the lives and careers of the Surveyors-General of NSW, setting them within the historical context in which they operated. It is arranged in chronological periods, with each period covering the tenure of approximately five or so Surveyors-General. A background section for each group of biographies sets out the main outline of settlement, development, mapping and survey in which the Surveyors-General operated. These background sections are followed by biographies of the lives and careers of the relevant Surveyors-General who held office in that period. The biographies of these men only record their own lives and achievments (or otherwise). They also provide details of many matters dealt with in the background sections.
