BATHURST HISTORY MUSEUM

The Bathurst District Historical Society Museum is located in the east wing of the majestic Bathurst Courthouse (c. 1880) at 162 Russell Street Bathurst. It once housed the local Bathurst Post Office. Displays are labelled and housed in glass viewing cases.

It is a treasure trove of local historical artefacts:

  • See the tree trunk carved by Surveyor Evans to mark his reaching the Lachlan River.

  • Investigate the world of Aboriginal artefacts, convict and colonial era, goldmining history, a famous Prime Minister, items from the Sudan and later wars, local businesses and professions and the life of our early pioneers.

  • Discover for yourself how the people lived and dressed in early Bathurst as you view our extensive collection of everyday items from the past.

  • View the historic early Bathurst photographs and paintings on the surrounding walls.

  • Volunteer curators mount thematic historical exhibitions in the museum from time to time throughout the year - so it is always changing and always interesting.
