The Bathurst cemetery has been in continual use for over 150 years. Its headstones provide a fascinating look into the past - a glimpse of the world of soldiers, pioneer settlers, convicts, teamsters, railway men and an Australian Prime Minister. Sandstone, marble and cast iron memorials were usually transported vast distances, to be erected as lasting memorials to Bathurst’s former residences.

The 100 Lives of Bathurst is based on family history, research and newspaper obituaries. Bathurst Regional Council called for nominations from the community for stories to be included in this book. Through the various life stories account has been taken of the social, economic and political events of the time, to reveal part of the diverse story of Bathurst and its community. The book also offers general information to the reader on the conservation and maintenance of cemetery monuments.
