Frank Johnson spent his entire working career as a civil engineer in the NSW railway industry and, since retiring, has become actively involved in Engineering Heritage. In his presentation, Frank will take you on an XPT journey through 150 years of the railway to Bathurst—an engaging exploration of the people, events, and developments that shaped its long and impressive history.
Under the leadership of John Whitton, the Engineer-in-Chief known as the “Father of the NSW Railways,” the Main West Railway Line reached Bathurst in 1876. Its construction posed significant political and engineering challenges, particularly for Whitton, but the line ultimately succeeded and later extended to the far reaches of New South Wales. Much has changed along the route since those early days, and Frank’s talk will shed light on the evolution of this vital rail corridor.
