Melvin Vaniman was an American photographer and adventurer who visited New Zealand and Australia in 1902-1904. Vaniman’s speciality at the time was taking panorama photos, often from the top of a pole or a ship’s mast. Vanimans Lookout at Katoomba is named after him, when he and the Katoomba postmaster at the time discovered the rock promontory.
Keith Painter has recently written a book titled “Thirty Blue Mountains Lookouts ~ the views, the people, the stories” where Vaniman features. Vaniman is known to have said “in Bathurst I got one of the most beautiful skies I have ever met”. Keith will give us an insight into Vaniman and show us some of the classic panorama photos he took while he was in Australia, including the Blue Mountains.
