John Judge will inform us on the “Sydney Railway Company to the N.S.W. Government Railways and on an historic train trip from Central to Bathurst.” In September 1848, a meeting was arranged in Sydney to obtain public support for a railway venture and issued a prospectus. They formed a committee to arrange for the establishment of “The Australian, Southern and Western Railway Company’ with local committees formed, one being here at Bathurst. In October 1849, the Sydney Railway Company was incorporated but Royal assent was not obtained until January 1851. From these beginnings eventually a
massive state-wide rail system emerged.
